Vail-Holt Funeral Homes
The Vail-Holt Funeral Home is a true family tradition that has been serving the Madison community for over 150 years. In 1839, Mr. Cornelius Vail founded Vail and White Funeral Home with his partner, Mr. J.H. White. Several years later the partnership was dissolved and the name of the business was changed to reflect only the Vail name.
At this time George Vail, a second generation of the Vail family, became involved in the funeral home business. The family tradition was later handed down to Harry Vail, a third generation Vail. Succeeding Harry, Frank P. Vail became the fourth generation of Vails to work at the Vail Funeral Home of Madison. The funeral home was located on Main Street just west of the current Madison City Hall during the 1800s and from 1920-24 at the corner of Third and West Street, in what is now the Historic Madison building. It moved to its present location in 1924. Jim Holt graduated from high school in Cross Plains, Indiana and then attended Kentucky School of Mortuary Science. He worked at the Lytle Funeral Home from 1965-68. Holt came to work for Dana Vail in 1968 and they formed a partnership on January 1, 1973. Mr. Vail died in December of 1973. In 1978, Jim and Sherrill Holt purchased the Grayson-Barnes Funeral Home in Hanover, renaming it Vail-Holt Funeral Home. They proceeded to offer the same dignified and professional service to the Hanover community that had been offered in Madison for generations. In 2002, Vail-Holt established the Madison Pet Memorial Part at 100 East Thornton Road. Today, the Holt's sons Brent and Rob are continuing the family tradition at Vail-Holt. |
